How might we preserve Indigenous cultural heritage and mitigate the effects of knowledge loss, language loss and community disconnection?

ethics
Ethical considerations 💬
Best practices were implemented into the research process to respect Indigenous cultural protocol. Secondary data was sourced from reputable Indigenous sources, (IPAC, UNESCO). Major cultural references were omitted from Echo to avoid appropriation of traditional imagery.
limitations
Research constraints 🔬
Time restraints during both iterations limited the ability to gain insights directly from Indigenous sources. To work around this limitation, extensive secondary research was conducted, allowing for a deeper exploration of the topic. Further primary research was outlined in the projects next steps.

problem
Communities are slowly eroding 🧱
To better empathize with the struggles facing Indigenous communities, I first took time to understand the past adversities faced by Indigenous communities. Learning about the effects of colonialization, residential schools and systemic oppression helped me understand why Indigenous communities are currently losing their intergenerational knowledge, languages, and facing increased community disconnection. Without additional support, Indigenous communities are at risk for total cultural extinction.
Knowledge loss
Intergenerational knowledge has been historically undermined and silenced by colonial forces, diminishing the Indigenous perspective and worldview.
Language loss
Shrinking indigenous populations and a lack of documentation has slowly eroded Indigenous languages, making communication increasingly difficult.
Disconnection
The effects of residential schools and systemic oppression has divided Indigenous communities, making identity formation and connection between elder and younger Indigenous individuals hard.

user personas
Culturally relevant user personas 🫂
While conducting my research I uncovered a beautiful cultural insight which inspired me to create two distinct intergenerational user personas. I learned that as Indigenous communities age, knowledge is passed from elder to younger generations, which forms the basis of cultural exchange and identity formation. I wanted to capture this dynamic in my primary and secondary personas. I incorporated parts of real life stories like that of Stephanie Jensen to create compelling personas with real user needs.
primary user
Meet Aubrey, 24
  • Young Indigenous woman reconnecting with her roots.
  • Wants to connect, give back, and stay informed.
  • Hopes to learn her language and find authentic goods.
  • Lacks access to Indigenous platforms and language tools.
  • Faces outdated archives and limited physical resources.
secondary user
Meet Ila, 58
  • Indigenous elder and leader focused on cultural preservation.
  • Wants to share knowledge and use simple digital tools.
  • Hopes to archive history and engage youth across communities.
  • Struggles with organizing written records and tech barriers.
  • Feels isolated as elders pass and time to preserve fades.

market analysis
Numerous markets showcase immense growth 🪴
As with any project, it was important to validate the feasibility for intervention within relevant global markets. To my excitement, I discovered numerous markets with promising growth metrics, like average yearly growth of over 12% within the cultural preservation space. What felt meaningful at this moment was the chance to affect meaningful change within marginalized communities (reflecting a core value in my design practice) whilst partaking in growing markets with exciting growth opportunities.

competitor analysis
Competitors don’t address the full problem ⚠️
Looking into competitors was slightly challenging, as existing solutions often didn’t cater directly to Indigenous needs. What little existed in helping preserve Indigenous communities was limited in scale, and didn’t fully address the problem of cultural loss. My exploration helped inform gaps and opportunities for a better more integrated solution, which ultimately reflected in the final solution Echo.

gaps/opportunities
Opportunities for innovation 🧪
My extensive secondary research process gave me a clear picture of the problem at hand, and while I wasn’t able to gain primary data, I felt confident in my ability to translate my discovery into meaningful opportunities for design intervention. I kept things simple, choosing to focus on four key areas and opportunities for innovation. I also took a moment to define the scope moving forward. My solution would support Indigenous communities, not fix any systemic challenges (due to their complexities).
/01
Acknowledge all facets of cultural loss, including knowledge loss, language loss and disconnection.
/02
Introduce preservation tools that make documenting knowledge and tracking a communities history easy.
/03
Incorporate language revitalization tools, with a focus on spoken and written language.
/04
Provide a space for community collaboration & knowledge exchange between Indigenous individuals.

feature selection
Making Echo as impactful as possible 🌟
Translating the initial opportunities for innovation into a tangible solution was challenging. The lack of firsthand Indigenous involvement made brainstorming features inefficient and less meaningful. To workaround this limitation I utilized a decision matrix and success criteria to outline 15+ impactful and feasible features for Echo. The result? A set of innovative solutions that addressed Indigenous cultural loss. From digital communities, fundraisers, timelines, and more, Echo was ready to make an impact.

design system
Terra is Echo’s elegant design system 🌿
Indigenous connections to nature are deeply rooted in spirituality, tradition, and a profound sense of responsibility and reciprocity. I was heavily inspired by this when creating Echo’s design system. Terra (Latin for Earth) incorporates natural tones with an elegant user interface. The use of traditional Indigenous imagery was omitted to respect cultural sensitivity and create a unique brand identity. Time constraints necessitated I dive right into mid/high fidelity prototypes where Terra was used extensively.

iteration
Streamlining actions & reducing steps 🪚
Throughout the prototyping process for Echo, I consistently looked for ways to simplify actions and reduce unnecessary steps. While working on the community tab, I replaced a multi-page flow with modals and buttons, removing over 3+ screens. This mindset of prioritizing clarity and efficiency guided my approach across the entire platform. I aimed to create an experience that felt respectful, accessible, and mindful of the unique needs of elder and younger Indigenous users.
Refinements
  1. Added a side modal, removing the need for 3+ extra pages.
  2. Simplified community ui elements, improving visual hierarchy.
  3. Added a join/leave button, streamlining user interactions.

final solution
A platform for preserving Indigenous voices 📣
Echo is a platform designed to preserve Indigenous culture by supporting the documentation of intergenerational knowledge, revitalizing language, and strengthening community connections. It blends modern design with cultural intention, creating a digital space where both young and elder Indigenous individuals like Aubrey and Ila can be heard, shared, and celebrated. By focusing on an intuitive user experience, Echo ensures Indigenous voices aren’t just preserved, but echoed for generations to come.

reflection
A challenging yet rewarding undertaking 🏆
Exploring this unique problem space pushed me to expand my understanding of cultural protocol and best practices. While I had to rely solely on secondary research (something that came with its own limitations) I remained committed to learning with care and intention. Despite the challenges, it was deeply rewarding to design for a community that’s often underserved, and to create a solution that aligned closely with my values as a designer: thoughtful, respectful, and impact-driven.
reflection
Time was a major limiting factor ⏰
Time constraints were a significant factor throughout Echo’s design process. With just two weeks to bring the project to life, I wasn’t able to conduct the level of research and user testing I had hoped for. Methods like user interviews and surveys would have strengthened both the data and the empathy behind my design decisions. Still, the process challenged me to prioritize, move with intention, and make the most of the time I had - skills that are just as valuable as the final product.

next steps
If given more time with Echo I would...
/01
Engage with Indigenous community members directly, and conduct further rounds of user testing.
/02
Expand languages with interactive gamified tutorials. Add settings, onboarding and profile pages.
/03
Introduce new monetized features to generate revenue while upholding a low-cost model (freemium).
/04
Incorporate more cultural artifacts and imagery with the permission of Indigenous community members.
